Have you wondered to yourself ‘Why do podcasters wear headphones?’ It may seem like a minor detail, but there is actually a good reason behind it. And no, it’s not just to show off whichever brand of headphones they’re using. In this post, we will explore why podcasters choose to wear headphones, and how it benefits both you as the host of your podcast and your listeners.

Why Do Podcasters Wear Headphones – The Quick Answer

If you want the quick answer as to why do podcasters wear headphones whilst recording, here it is:

Podcasters mainly wear headphones to monitor the audio quality in real-time. By using headphones, you can detect any background noise, echo, or technical issues that may affect your episode recording. This then allows you to make adjustments on the spot regarding any sound issues you come across and ensure a seamless listening experience for your audience.

For some podcasters, wearing headphones helps them to stay focused and engaged with their conversation, enabling them to respond more effectively to their guests and ask follow-up questions.

It might sound obvious, but headphones allow you to hear your own voice. Whilst this might feel cringy as hell to listen to yourself speaking, it’s a really good way of helping with your delivery and articulation. It also allows you to modulate your volume and tone, making sure you are speaking at an appropriate level for your microphone.

By actively listening through the headphones as you record, you can refine your performance and deliver a more polished and professional episode.

Why Do Podcasters Wear Headphones? – 2 Reasons Why

So you’ve had the quick answer as to why podcasters wear headphones, but now we’re going to dive into 6 more specific reasons as to why you might choose to wear headphones whilst recording your podcast episodes.

Reason 1: Enhancing Audio Quality with Headphones

As we previously mentioned, the number 1 reason for wearing headphones whilst recording your podcast episodes is to ensure the audio quality of your recording.

By wearing headphones whilst recording your podcast episodes, you can hear any background noise, echo, or technical issues that may affect your recording. This allows you to make adjustments with your microphone or recording environment on the spot so as to ensure a seamless listening experience for your audience.

Reason 2: Improving Communication with Guests and Co-Hosts

Wearing headphones can also improve communication between you as the podcaster, guests, and co-hosts.

When everyone wears headphones, it creates a more intimate and engaged atmosphere. It allows you to hear the people you are talking with more clearly and reduces the chance of interruptions or misunderstandings. This is especially important when you are recording remotely or in noisy environments.

How to Choose Headphones for Podcasting

When choosing headphones for podcasting, there are a few things to keep in mind.

Style of Headphone

First, you should consider the type of headphones you want. There are two main types: over-ear and in-ear. Over-ear headphones are more comfortable and provide better sound quality, while in-ear headphones are more portable. For me, comfortable headphones is super important, and something that people don’t talk about enough when recommending headphones. Sure, sound quality is important, but you aren’t going to want to wear headphones that you find uncomfortable, no matter how good your voice might sound whilst you’re presenting.

Sound Quality

Second, you need to think about the sound quality of your headphones. Can you head clearly through them? Do they pick up static? Are they noise-cancelling, or are they letting in loads of noise? Headphones that have great sound quality don’t need to break the bank and Amazon reviews is a very helpful way to guauge the sound quality of headphones before buying them.

Compatibility

Third, and hopefully obviously, check the connection of the headphones you want to get with your recording software. There’s no point in buying plug in headphones if your laptop or computer doesn’t have an aux port. Same goes for wireless headphones that your laptop or computer won’t or can’t connect too. It might sound dull (because if you’re anything like me you’re more interested in what your headphones look like than loads of tech specs), but checking specs before buying can save you a lot of hassle.

Price

Finally, you should consider the price of the headphones before you buy them. After all, podcasting is about being creative and having fun, not breaking the bank.

While there are many expensive headphones on the market, there are also many affordable options that provide excellent sound quality. You should choose headphones that fit your budget, provide good sound quality, and are comfortable.

The Headphones I Use for Podcast Recording

My go-to headphones for recording podcast episodes for The Lazy Girl’s Guide to Podcasting are my SoundCore over-ear headphones. Over the years I have amassed loads of headphones, including the SoundCore over-the-ear, knock-off Skull Candy over-the ear, in-ear Beats, and the Apple headphones that used to come with iPhones. Each of these headphones has their plus and minus points.
