Getting your audience to leave a review of your podcast can feel like pulling teeth at times. Because sometimes, no matter how nicely you ask, it’s harder to get listeners to hit the 5-star button or type a few nice words before they carry on with their lives.

And I get it.

We’re asking them to give us something that takes up their time for nothing in return (because let’s face it, we’re going to keep producing episodes anyway, right?).

So with this in mind, it’s no wonder that there are some podcasters who turn to buying podcast reviews.

And after a quick Google, this doesn’t seem hard to do. When Googling ‘fake podcast reviews,’ the first page is awash with services where I can buy ‘quality’ and ‘safe’ reviews from $20. (The fact that they’re sold as ‘safe’ reviews makes me suspicious from the off!). There’s even one guy talking about how he purchased fake reviews and ‘cheated’ the Apple Podcast system for $5.

So, whether you’re thinking about buying podcast reviews to boost your show’s credibility and attract a larger audience, or are just curious by this blog posts title, I want to dive into the world of buying fake podcast reviews.

Why?

Well, because buying reviews isn’t harmless for anyone and it’s crucial to understand the truth behind this practice.

In today’s competitive podcasting landscape, reviews play a significant role in determining a show’s success. However, not all reviews are created equal, and purchasing them can come with consequences.

The Importance of Podcast Reviews

First up; are podcast reviews important?

Well, like anything, it depends.

For some podcasters, reviews are a measure of success and a way of getting feedback from your listeners. For others, they’re a vanity metric that doesn’t matter because you produce your content for the love of it and the process and not for what others think about it.

Only you can decide if podcast reviews are a meaningful way of deciding if you’re running a successful podcast or not.

Why Positive Reviews Matter

Regardless of your opinion of reviews, they can serve as a crucial barometer for measuring a show’s quality, credibility, and impact.

Positive reviews can attract new listeners, increase engagement, and ultimately help your podcast stand out in a crowded market.

Reviews provide social proof, showing potential listeners that your show is worth their time and attention. Furthermore, they provide valuable feedback that can help you improve your content and delivery. Whether you’re a seasoned podcaster or just starting out, podcast reviews can be a great component of your show’s growth strategy.

However, it’s important to note that not all reviews hold the same weight.

Genuine, authentic feedback from real listeners is far more valuable than artificially generated reviews. And while it may be tempting to take shortcuts and purchase reviews, the consequences can be severe.

The Role of Podcast Reviews in Building Credibility

Credibility is one of the most critical factors that determine the success of a podcast.

Listeners want to know that they can trust the information, insights, and entertainment provided by the show. Positive reviews from real listeners can help establish this credibility. They act as testimonials, showcasing the value and impact of your podcast to potential listeners. Additionally, reviews can influence potential sponsors, who often look at the number and quality of reviews before deciding to invest in your show.

On the other hand, fake or purchased reviews can have a detrimental effect on your show’s credibility.

When listeners discover that reviews are not genuine, it raises questions about the authenticity and trustworthiness of your content. This can lead to a loss of listeners, a damaged reputation, and even legal consequences.

Building a reputable podcast takes time, effort, and genuine engagement with your audience. Buying reviews undermines this process and can have long-term negative consequences. Remember, it’s easier to lose your audience than it is the gain it.

The Ethical Considerations of Buying Podcast Reviews

Beyond the potential consequences, there are ethical considerations to take into account when considering purchasing podcast reviews.

Buying reviews goes against the principles of transparency, honesty, and authenticity that are valued in the podcasting community. It’s important to remember that your listeners trust you to provide them with valuable and trustworthy content. Engaging in deceptive practices erodes that trust and can damage your relationship with your audience.

Buying reviews can also harm other podcasters who are working hard to build their shows organically. It can create an unfair advantage and undermine the credibility of the podcasting industry as a whole. It’s crucial to approach podcasting with integrity, ensuring that your success is built on genuine engagement, quality content, and a loyal audience.

The Risks and Drawbacks of Purchasing Podcast Reviews

While the allure of quick success may be tempting (especially at such low costs!), purchasing podcast reviews comes with significant risks and drawbacks.

Firstly, fake reviews are often easy to spot. Listeners can quickly identify patterns, inconsistencies, and suspicious activity that indicate purchased reviews. This can lead to losing trust, credibility, and ultimately listenership.

Secondly, fake reviews can also attract negative attention. The podcasting community is tight-knit, and word travels fast. If your show is discovered to have engaged in fraudulent practices, you may face backlash from both listeners and fellow podcasters. This can lead to a damaged reputation, loss of sponsorships, and limited future opportunities.

Lastly, purchasing reviews is a short-term solution that does not address the core issues of your podcast’s growth. It may provide a temporary boost in numbers, but without genuine engagement and high-quality content, these numbers are unlikely to translate into long-term success. Building a successful podcast requires dedication, hard work, and a genuine connection with your audience.

When Buying Reviews Goes Wrong

Whilst researching this post, I came across this screenshot on Twitter. It shows two reviews left by a disgruntled podcast promoter.

Now, it’s fair to say that I do not know the background and context of these reviews. However, whatever the back story, it’s clear that these negative reviews have been left on this podcast. And to me, these reviews spark two issues:

  1. It immediately becomes clear that the podcaster was buying reviews, which then makes you question which reviews were fake and which were genuine.
  2. The 1-star reviews could bring down the overall average star ratings of the podcast (I’ve no idea what other star ratings this podcast has).

Thanks to Podtastic Audio for sharing this screenshot on Twitter in the first place. I’d also like to stress that these reviews are NOT from the Podtastic Audio podcast; they were sharing this screenshot to raise awareness of buying fake podcast reviews.

Alternatives to Buying Podcast Reviews

Instead of resorting to purchasing reviews, there are alternative strategies that can help you grow your podcast organically.

Firstly, focus on creating high-quality content that resonates with your target audience. Provide value, entertain, and educate your listeners. When your content is compelling, your audience will naturally leave positive reviews and recommend your show to others.

Secondly, engage with your audience on various platforms. Foster a sense of community by responding to comments, messages, and reviews. Encourage listeners to leave reviews by mentioning it in your show, social media posts, and email newsletters. Make it easy for them to provide feedback by sharing the links to review platforms.

Lastly, collaborate with other podcasters in your niche. Guest appearances, cross-promotion, and interviews can help expose your show to new audiences and increase your chances of receiving genuine reviews. Building relationships with fellow podcasters can also provide valuable insights, support, and opportunities for growth.

Strategies for Generating Organic Podcast Reviews

Generating organic podcast reviews requires a proactive approach. It can be tough to get your audience to spend even a few minutes writing you a quick review, but here are some strategies to consider to boost your chances:

  1. Ask for reviews – It might sound too easy to be true, but encourage your listeners to leave reviews by mentioning it in your show, social media posts, and website. You could even offer incentives like exclusive content or giveaways to a shout-out on your next episode.
  2. Make it easy – Provide direct links to review platforms in your show notes, website, and social media profiles. The easier it is for listeners to leave a review, the more likely they are to do so.
  3. Engage with your audience – Never underestimate the power of connection and engagement. Respond to comments, messages, and reviews. Show your listeners that you value their feedback and appreciate their support.
  4. Showcase reviews – Highlight positive reviews on your website and social media platforms. This not only shows appreciation for your listeners but also acts as social proof for potential new listeners.
  5. Leverage social media – Use platforms like Twitter, Instagram, and Facebook to engage with your audience, share updates about your show, and encourage reviews.

Remember, the key to generating organic podcast reviews is to provide value, engage with your audience, and create a memorable listening experience.

The Long-Term Benefits of Authentic Podcast Reviews

While it may take time and effort to generate authentic podcast reviews, the long-term benefits far outweigh the short-lived boost of purchased reviews. Authentic reviews build credibility, attract genuine listeners, and foster a loyal community around your show. They provide valuable feedback that can help you improve your content and delivery. Positive reviews could also increase your chances of securing sponsorships and partnerships, further fueling your podcast’s growth.

Additionally, authentic reviews contribute to your show’s long-term success by improving its discoverability. As algorithms become smarter and platforms prioritise genuine engagement, real reviews will play an even more significant role in determining your show’s visibility and reach. By investing in building genuine relationships with your audience, you lay a solid foundation for sustained growth and success.

Conclusion: Making an Informed Decision on Podcast Reviews

Before you consider buying podcast reviews, it’s essential to weigh the potential benefits against the risks and drawbacks. While reviews play a role in building credibility and attracting listeners, purchasing them can have severe consequences. Fake reviews undermine your show’s reputation, create an unfair advantage, and erode the trust of your audience.

Instead of taking shortcuts, focus on generating organic podcast reviews through high-quality content, genuine engagement with your audience, and strategic promotion. Build relationships with fellow podcasters, ask for reviews, and make it easy for your listeners to provide feedback. By investing in authentic growth strategies, you create a solid foundation for long-term success.

Remember, podcasting is a journey, and success is built on trust, authenticity, and genuine connections. Embrace the process, stay committed to your vision, and let your passion for your podcast shine through. With time and dedication, your show will attract loyal listeners, genuine reviews, and the success you deserve.
